Introducing Stuart chiropractor Dr. John Grassam

Stuart chiropractor Dr. John Grassam

“Unlike many children,” remembers Dr. John Grassam. “I was born (with three other siblings) into the chiropractic lifestyle. No vaccinations, no antibiotics, and no prescription drugs. Both my parents had wonderful chiropractic experiences when they were young. My mom had severe menstrual cramps and migraine headaches that had her bed ridden. A girlfriend of hers recommended chiropractic. After regular care with Dr. Roger O’Dell she never had a problem again. My father was dating my mother at that time. At the age of seven he fell off of a roof landing flat on his back. By age seventeen he suffered with duodenal ulcers. After significant improvement with the ulcers, my father decided to become a chiropractor.”

“Choosing chiropractic was a no-brainer for me.” continues Dr. Grassam. “Over the years the number of people that got well under my fathers care was incredible. There were children who suffered from ear infections or asthma. Patients with severe back or neck pain from auto accidents. That was only the tip of the iceberg. Many had exhausted medical treatment, tried chiropractic and achieved great results.”

Dr. Grassam began his pre-chiropractic education at local community colleges, taking basic science courses such as biology, physics, inorganic, and organic chemistry. After completion, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Regents College and was accepted at Life University Marietta, Georgia. During his four years at Life, courses included biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, x-ray, diagnosis, nutrition, orthopedics, pediatrics, spinal biomechanics, and spinal adjusting techniques. The last two years (along with a rigorous class schedule) required treating patients at Life University Public Clinics. After graduating in 1998 Dr. Grassam returned to the Stuart area to establish his practice.

Dr. Grassam met and married Dr. Lisa Grassam while in school. They have two children, Ian and Alexis. Both children were born at home and have never been vaccinated or received an antibiotic. (If that sounds interesting, be sure to ask him to explain!) “I love to snorkel and scuba dive. Unfortunately I don't get to do it as often as I would like.” He also donates his time to coaching YMCA youth basketball. “Basketball is one of my favorite sports to play and I love helping the kids.”

The Grassam family gets adjusted once a week. “My kids are some of the healthiest I know.” says Dr. Grassam. What does he do for exercise? “I weight train three days a week with cardio every other day. Sometimes life gets hectic or an injury occurs and I get off my routine. I don't beat myself up over it. I reestablish my healthcare goals and get back on track. Like life, health is a journey not a destination.”

Dr. John Asks some important questions of interest to Stuart residents - Chiropractor Stuart Dr. John Asks...

Why is a "slipped disc" unlikely?
Separating each spinal vertebra is a disc. Its fibrous outer ring holds in a jelly-like material. Because of the way a disc attaches to the spinal bones above and below it, it can't actually "slip." However, a disc can bulge, tear, herniate, thin and collapse. But it can't slip.
What's the difference between chiropractic and medicine?
Medical treatment focuses on the disease or the symptom. Chiropractic focuses on the person with the disease or the symptom. Medical treatment usually involves changing blood chemistry. Chiropractic involves restoring nervous system integrity. Medical doctors prescribe medicine. Chiropractors adjust the spine—a common source of nervous system interference.
